Dictionaries define vintage in a couple of ways. The comparison to a good wine is unavoidable because of the use of the word ‘vintage’ in connection with particularly good quality grape harvests and the resultant wine. Typically it can mean the grape yield or wine produced from a particular season (and district) or, more often, the produce of a particularly good year at a renowned vineyard. It also suggests that the wine is of a very high quality.
In terms of other commodities, such as cars, clothing, music and jewellery, it suggests the fashion of a particular age in history that has a certain maturity, quality and distinctness as to set that age apart from other ages - an age that deserves respect.
That is all certainly true of vintage jewellery. With jewellery there are so many notable eras with distinctive styles: There’s the Victorian era, the Edwardian era, the Art Nouveau period that spans the late Victorian era and extends throughout the Edwardian era, the Art Deco period of the late 1920s and 1930s and the designs of the 1940s, 50s and 60s. And all of this just covers the last 170 years or so!
We could look back many, many more years in our study of vintage jewellery, but the periods mentioned above are those that most interest us today as being styles that can still be worn with confidence. This is probably because the jewellery of these ages has more to do with fashion and style than it has to do with regalia or status. Those who seek vintage style jewellery do so for many reasons: Nostalgia, the love of a particular era, sheer romance, the desire to be different and reasons that we cannot even predict. That's the name of the game when it comes to individual taste. Whether it is in clothing, decor, music, jewellery etc., individuals have different tastes and for a diverse range of reasons.
